Begin in Athens at the cradle of Western civilization, then drive into the Peloponnese for ancient theaters, seaside towns and a fortress that rises from the sea. The back half trades ruins for ferries, beaches and the island of Elafonissos.

Day 01
Arrive in Athens.
Day 02
Athens — Plaka, Monastiraki or Koukaki. Catch the Changing of the Guard at Syntagma Square (11am). Sleep: Athens.
Day 03
Monastiraki Square and the National Archaeological Museum. Sleep: Athens.
Day 04
Rent a car: Corinth (Temple of Apollo and the canal), then ancient Mycenae, on to Nafplio. Sleep: Nafplio.
Day 05
Explore Nafplio and its beaches. Sleep: Nafplio.
Day 06
Kayak tour to the Epidaurus sunken city and little theater. Sleep: Nafplio.
Day 07
Drive south via Tegea and Sparta to Pounta; ferry to Elafonissos. Sleep: Elafonissos.
Day 08
Beaches and boating on Elafonissos. Sleep: Elafonissos.
Day 09
Ferry back; Kastania Cave, then on to Monemvasia. Sleep: Monemvasia.
Day 10
Explore the Monemvasia fortress town. Sleep: Monemvasia.
Day 11
Drive back to Athens; the Parthenon. Sleep: near the airport.
Day 12
Depart Greece.
