WE'VE RUN THIS ROUTE OURSELVES
Ruins first, beaches second.
Begin in Athens at the cradle of Western civilization, then drive into the Peloponnese for ancient theaters, seaside towns and a fortress that rises from the sea. The back half trades ruins for ferries, beaches and the island of Elafonissos.

WHY I PICKED THIS ROUTE
Monemvasia was the stop nobody had heard of and everybody talks about now - a fortress town you can only reach by causeway, with a fraction of the crowds you'd find on Santorini.
GOOD TO KNOW
- Book the Elafonissos ferry a day ahead in shoulder season
- Nafplio's beaches are a short walk from the old town - no car needed there
- Many tavernas close between lunch and dinner; plan around it
