Before the 40 countries, there was a van and this park. Yellowstone is where our family figured out we could live this way - and it's also where millions of visitors a year do it wrong (I wrote a whole blog post about the tourons). We caravan the park loop together: I've booked the sites months out, I know which geyser basins to hit at 7am, and every night ends at the same campfire. Bring your own rig or rent one - I'll help you choose.

GEYSER DAY
Old Faithful before the crowds, then the boardwalks of the Upper Basin - timed so kids never queue.
GRAND CANYON OF THE YELLOWSTONE
The falls, the overlooks, and a picnic that out-views any restaurant.
LAMAR VALLEY
Dawn wildlife run - bison, elk, and if we're lucky, wolves. Afternoon at a swim spot only locals use.
FLEX DAY
Mammoth terraces, a fishing morning, or nothing at all - camp chairs count as an activity.
